Renata Sheppard is an artist whose work as a director, performer and entrepreneur spans multiple disciplines including dance, film, visual arts and new media. Born in Italy and raised in the United States, she is a third culture kid constantly in motion, in the dance studio (trained in ballet and modern) or starting up a new non-profit (here in Virginia!). She has lived and worked in the USA, Europe, and Asia with adventures as a Fulbright and Henry Luce Scholar, Kate Neal Kinley Fellow, and US Embassy Artist. She is the Artistic Director of Experimental Film Virginia, a unique artist residency and film festival.
She was recently awarded a Hampton Roads Cultural Alliance “Allie” for Creative Leadership and honored as a Virginia 50 for 50 “Exemplary Program and Pinnacle Event”. Her work has been presented in Italy, France, Spain, Germany, United Kingdom, Tunisia, India, Taiwan, Korea, Australia, Canada, and throughout the United States as well as locally at the Main Hotel, Work|Release and Norfolk Academy. She spends most of her time in Virginia and works part time in Italy as the Creative Director of Balletto Teatro di Torino. She began ballroom this year training with Dmitry Sviridov and has been humbled by the experience of learning a completely new form of dance.
