Mike is a man of many talents, who also wears many hats.
The Hampton Roads native is a former dancer, choreographer and model in his own right. This motivational speaker left the glitter and glamour of stage and runway due to a serious accident which placed him in a body cast for six months with one hundred and fifty stitches. Doctors assured him of a pronounced limp and that he would never dance again.
Believing that “triumph can come from tragedy” also being an award winning bridal tailor and floral designer, took his talents and became CEO of Hardin House LTD.” If you can dream it, I can make it happen” Creating everything from intimate elegance to opulent extravaganza, was his goal.
Having a positive attitude is paramount believing “with GOD anything is possible”. Mike has received numerous honors and awards throughout his lifetime. Virginias Mr. Dance, Hampton Roads Model of the year, People’s Choice Award, 2000 NYC (Costume Design and Construction), Top K-9 trainer (VA K-9 Trainer’s Assoc.) and several community service honours.
The title of which he is most proud of is “Pastor Mike”, as he is known to many Southside and Peninsula families. An honor to which he feels is undeserved but to his inner city kids most of whom have kids of their own, feel the title is rightly earned.
Pastor Mike is the Founder and Senior Chaplin of the Hampton Roads Inner City Christian Ministries, an outreach program for individuals and families in time of crisis. Under the mentorship of the late Father Tom Quinlin, Mike has personally funded the Ministry since it began in 1985.
One of his kids, who is now an ordained clergy herself said, “Back in the days of the AIDS panic, he was the only one who took the time to listen, care and be a Pastor to us. I would have never made it without him”
In 2005 he heard a second calling. Duty, Honor, Country, Leaving the ministry in safe and trusted hands, Mike accepted a contract/position as a Conditioner/Trainer for the U.S. Government, working with all branches of active military. Its primary focus being K-9 explosive detectors (bomb Dogs) he is also an active volunteer with Web of Life Animal Outreach, a seven acre No Kill, rescue on West Road in Chesapeake Virginia. Most recently he is working with volunteers for the Virginia Dept. of Veterans Services on a program of his design, for Veterans of all ages, who have no families, called Families of the Heart. His favorite time of day is spent with his K=9 family members, Ashley-Taylor (Akita) and Buddy-Man (Boxer-Pitt mix) who are trained therapy dogs. Like their Dad they volunteer throughout the community whenever possible.
