The daughter of a Navy captain, Dee Branch Oliver grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia and received her undergraduate degree in Education and Art from Virginia Wesleyan College. When she wed Johnnie Oliver in 1984, Dee began her career in the funeral business and eventually went back to school to earn her B.S. in Mortuary Science.
Despite having more than 20 years’ experience helping people through the bereavement process, Dee was overwhelmed when Johnnie died unexpectedly in 2007. Her journey from bereaved spouse to head-of-the-house inspired her to share her experiences with others in her two books, Going Out in Style: How to Make a Graceful Exit and Survive the Loss of the One You Love and The Undertaker’s Wife. Packed with Dee’s personal experience and professional expertise and laced with her unique brand of tender humor, the books are invaluable resources for both the bereaved and for those wanting to make a “graceful exit” that will ease the burden on our loved ones.
A lifelong resident of the Tidewater area, Dee currently serves as Vice Chairperson of the Virginia Beach Planning Commission and on the board of Virginia Beach Homes Now for the Homeless. She is also a member of the Virginia Beach Garden Club and Galilee Church.
In 2015, Dee married Boyd Melchor, owner of Kelly’s Tavern(s). They live in Virginia Beach with Dee’s three daughters and spend their free time exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains, sampling craft beers to add to Kelly’s ever-expanding selection, and rating burgers.
